What's Love Got to Do With It

This essay is my critical examination of the film The Piano and of Bell Hook's essay concerning sexism and misogyny. I first read the essay and then watched the film. At first, I was just trying to see what Ms. Hook was pointing out, but then I realized I needed to make my own opinions about the movie, while still being enlightened by the examination of Bell Hook. The Piano "seduces and excites audiences with its uncritical portrayal of sexism and misogyny." Misogyny and sexism are the central themes in the movie, although I have to say that the movie relies on these ideas to keep it alive and of interest to women because it's the very most thing they are familiar with. The Piano raises interesting and important questions about morality, love and the ends justifying the means. It's a story of manipulation, blackmail and unexpected attraction.
