The Significance of the Akan Slave Rebellions and the Demerera Revolt of 1823.

In this paper the Demerera rebellion of 1823 is discussed in the light of previous disturbances that helped to inspire the Abolition movement in Britain of the preceding century. At the time of Jamaica's "Baptist Rebellion" of 1821, or the Demerera incident in Guyana of 1823, British reformers' efforts towards Abolition had slowed, as effort was made to end the slave trade following a the 1822 Royal decree abolishing the trade in British colonies and promising the abolition of slavery itself.
